The dialogue and narrative surrounding Black fathers' role in their children’s educational pursuits and success is under-researched, misunderstood, and still predominantly framed from a deficit perspective.
The unique strategies and collective strengths that Black fathers bring to the family-school partnership space can inform the entire education and family-school partnership landscape.
Participants will reflect on current narratives about Black fathers and engage in dialogue and activities to begin shifting and adding context to that narrative. They will better understand how traditional family-school practices impact how Black fathers engage with schools. Participants will hear and interact with doctoral research that begins to understand the conditions of building stronger communities for Black fathers in relation to the family-school partnership.
This session is ideal for school leaders, practitioners, educators, non-profit leaders, and community organizers.
